My laptop's battery has died, It's lithium-ion type.

[background]I let my laptop's in a shelf for a long, long time and the battery was drained: when I realized it was dead.

Fortunately, all that had to be done was to replace the damaged cells
If you ever wanted to repair a laptop battery, make sure that the battery is the real problem

Failure to meet those, and maybe other, requirements might mean that there is another problem besides or instead of the battery.

Now I will give you the simple instructions of this simple process. You can, however, harm your computer (if you donīt use the appropiate batteries) and even yourself (if you short-circuit anything) I cannot be held responsible since I am telling it to you right now: do not try this if you aren't completely sure about it.

If you feel ready, then check the following information:

Divide the voltage of you battery between 3.6. The result must match or double (I havenīt seen a case, but might triple...) the number of smaller units inside of your battery (I had 14.4/3.6= 8). If your numbers arenīt as I described, there is something wrong, re-check if you have li-ion type batteries

Is everything allright? Now get the following materials

  1. You must split open the battery. Locate where the battery can safely be taken appart, place the tip of the cutter there
  2. Gently hit the blunt side of the cutter with the hammer. DON'T LET THE TIP OF THE CUTTER TO GO DEEPER THAN 1CM! you will damage the battery. Keep going until you have opened the battery. Be careful, you donīt want to damage the battery':s mainboard.
  3. Make a drawing of what is in the inside (specially of the smaller batteries and how they are oriented)
  4. Use the multimeter and write the polarities in your drawing. This is how you will place the new units

You might be ready to order your new replacement units. Mine were "ICR18650 2200mAh 3.6V", which are commonly what should be gotten
As a side note, I found the best price at ebay, but there was a yahoo store which offered a good deal, too. Unless somewhere else stated, your new units MUST have built-in protection circuitry (because it is very likely that you wonīt buy the replacements identical to the original ones).

The next step is removing the original units and placing the new ones in the exact same position and according to the exact same polarity. You might have to use the cutter and the hammer again to separate the units and the attaching plaques (which are soldered-fused to them).
Finally, assemble everything with tape. Do not use too much, tough, otherwise your "new" battery might not fit in your laptop

The result will be a fully funcional battery, like a new one, or better. You wonīt want to take that to a beauty contest, however; windows wonīt be able to estimate the charge of the battery, either. Iīm happy with the final product: and I got a truly FRESH battery. All original batteries, though new, have passed some time in storage, and Li-ion batteries are damaged just by being storaged...
